Power Greens: The Scoop on Algae & Some Algae-Rich Recipes
When you think algae, do you think of the green (literal) scum floating at the top of a pond? Mmmmmm, appetizing. But yeah, by algae, I mean green pond scum. Did you know that algae is incredibly beneficial for your health? Of course, I don’t recommend taking a dose of the floating green algae on top of a pond, definitely do your research, and find a company that sources their algae-products sustainably. I like to add a little spirulina, chlorella or a few drops of chlorophyll to my green smoothie. Here’s why you may consider adding it to yours:
Spirulina:
- Excellent source of protein (50-70% protein by weight)
- Rich source of antioxidants (helps fight free-radicals). Antioxidants produced due to blue-green pigment called “phycocyanin”.
- Full of vitamins and minerals (vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, potassium, vitamin B5, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, copper, iron, etc.)
- Helps regulate blood pressure
- Boosts the immune system
- “The best ‘whole-food’ source other than human milk” -Pitchford, Paul. Healing with Whole Foods; Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition. Edition 3. Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books. 2002.
- Best when consumed in tablet or powder form
Here is my go-to spirulina brand. As always, please reach out if you have a go-to brand you love!
Chlorella: (A fresh water algae)
- Helps rid the body of toxins and heavy metals (such as lead and mercury). It has been known to eliminate metals in the body 7x faster than without chlorella.
- Immunity boost: green is GOOD! Helps prevent colds and other illnesses.
- Increases energy naturally—helps body regenerate energy quickly by giving the body essential nutrients
- Can help prevent cancer by increasing white blood cell counts
- Great source of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals
- Best when consumed in tablet or powder form
I love the chlorella from my local juice bar.
Chlorophyll:
- Full of amazing vitamins and minerals (rich in vitamins A and C)
- Can aid in weight loss by controlling cravings. Chlorophyll helps stabilize blood sugar levels.
- Assists the body in eliminating heavy metals
- Promotes healthy iron levels—great for women!
My favorite chlorophyll comes in liquid form. I like to add it to a glass of water and chug it first thing in the morning.
Ingredients:
- ½ c almond milk (or dairy-free milk of choice)
- ½ frozen banana
- 1-2 handfuls of greens (kale, spinach, microgreens, etc.)
- ¼ avocado
- ¼ c frozen mango or peaches
- ¼ tsp spirulina
- ¼ tsp chlorella
- 5 drops of liquid chlorophyll
- 1 scoop of protein powder of choice (optional)
- 1 scoop of Vital Proteins collagen peptides (optional)
Prep: Blend all ingredients together in high-speed blender until well incorporated. Feel free to add a bit more liquid if your blender is struggling a bit.
Homemade Spirulina Salad Dressing (yes, I’m serious)
Ingredients:
- ¼ c extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil
- ¼ c apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar
- ¼ tsp Dijon mustard or spicy brown mustard
- ¼ tsp paprika
- 1/8 tsp spirulina powder
- ½ tsp organic hemp hearts
- ¼ tsp honey (optional)
Prep: Mix well in a blender or with a mortar and pestle. Blend until hemp hearts have broken down. Drizzle on top of your favorite salad, or use it as a pasta salad dressing, or a spread on a sandwich!
