Miles' Nursery Tour

Miles' Nursery Tour

WOW! It has been awhile since I’ve written a blog post. I knew there would be a lot of unexpected things that come with having a baby, but I did not anticipate how uninspired I’d be in terms of writing/posting on my blog. That said, I’ve been SO excited about sharing this post….it has certainly been a long time coming! I think I can safely say that Miles’ nursery is FINALLY done. We waited for months for his glider to arrive, and now it just feels complete.

Before we found out Miles was a boy, I knew I wanted a fairly gender neutral nursery, and I wanted to invest in pieces that didn’t scream BABY! I also wanted to have pieces that would grow with Miles and our family. I am truly so in love with Miles’ sweet room, and it has quickly become my favorite room in our house. I hope he finds it just as cozy and comforting as we do.

Also, a little advice for any future mamas-to-be who might be reading this; ORDER YOUR FURNITURE SOONER RATHER THAN LATER! I did not anticipate how long things would take. We did go the custom route for a number of items in the nursery (more on that below), but in general, most furniture seems to take awhile to arrive if you are buying it new (vs second hand).

I am so pleased with how his room turned out, and I am so excited to finally share it with you! While the crib is the real centerpiece of his sweet room, I can confidently say the drapes are my favorite element in the nursery. For Miles’ drapes and bedskirt, we worked with Erika Powell Textiles, a female owned textile brand out of Florida. I cannot recommend Erika and her team enough. They were responsive, and couldn’t have been nicer. Erika and her team helped us decide on which fabrics would pair well together. Ultimately, we went with her “Whiskers” textile in the shade “Mineral” for the curtains, and “Gerty’s Dot” in the “Rainwashed” colorway for his bedskirt. We also ordered a few yards of her beautiful “Cypress Knot” fabric in “Mineral” to have made into pillows which currently reside in our living room (until Miles has a big boy bed!).

Erika has such a gorgeous selection of textiles, which made it so hard to decide on a combination! I also love her “Peppy Leopard”, “Artichoke”, and “Viney Stripe” prints…but they are all so good and timeless. You can’t go wrong with anything from Erika, and I know her fabrics will be a staple in our household for years to come.

Miles’ crib was one of the first things we ordered, and I absolutely love it. It can be converted to a toddler bed, which is great for the future! We went with classic white, and it truly is stunning. In terms of a mattress, we were kindly gifted one from Newton baby. It is breathable and washable, which is really amazing. It also seems comfortable! 10 out of 10 recommend! Both Miles’ mattress and crib are GREENGUARD Gold Certified.

The gorgeous huge mirror we used in Miles’ room was actually an Amazon dupe of a $500 Pottery Barn mirror. It is literally the exact same mirror, at almost half the price. It makes such a statement and Miles LOVES looking at himself in in.

For a dresser we used a second hand piece that was previously in my bedroom. I purchased this dresser via Craigslist back in 2015 and it will probably live in our house forever. It’s such a great piece. We use the Keekaroo Peanut changing mat on top.

I mentioned our glider earlier, which definitely took way longer to arrive than I anticipated (9.5 months!!). It, like much of our upholstered furniture, is from CR Laine, a custom furniture company based in North Carolina. We went with the Harper swivel glider. It is comfortable, but since it took so long to arrive, we actually don’t use it very much. I kinda wish we had gone with a less expensive, non-custom piece since it’s ended up being pretty insignificant to us. That said, we hope to have another baby in a few years, so it’ll get used again then. It is also a beautiful chair that would look great in a bedroom or office down the road. Our chair is the Harper Swivel Glider with the “Watson” fabric in the “Natural” shade. On the glider sits a beautiful embroidered dog pillow from Chelsea Textiles. It is adorable. Miles’ also likes to lounge on his Pehr play mat. I might purchase a second one of these for our living room, it’s just so cozy!

Another thing I am not sure was worth it for us were Miles’ woven blinds. This room previously acted as a guest room, and had those ugly metal mini blinds. When I ordered Miles’ woven blinds from Lowes (they are the Bali woven blinds. Style name: “Tarkine”, color: “Ocean Sand, 03370”), we hadn’t yet decided on doing blackout curtains. So the [expensive] blackout blinds are a bit overkill. We typically just draw the curtains closed, but who knows, maybe in the future we will prefer to just use the blinds. I do however think they look really gorgeous in the window.

Next to our glider is a beautiful vintage wooden table I picked up at a yard sale a few months ago. I love incorporating antique and vintage pieces in every room in our house, so Miles’ nursery was no exception. Similarly, for Christmas, my grandmother gifted me an antique children’s chair that both my mom and aunt used, as well as my grandmother and her siblings. It is the perfect little chair for MIles’ stuffed animals to sit on, and I already dream of him reading a book on it in a few years time. So special.

In terms of art and accessories, we went with the beloved scalloped baskets from Ballard Designs. I think most millennial parents included them in their nursery, but they are just too cute and hold all of Miles’ toys! The painting above the crib is by my talented aunt, Julia Macdonald. It is one of my favorite things about his room, and the colors are so gorgeous and tranquil. She did the most amazing job. Something else that is super special in the nursery is the sheep window painting above the dresser. This actually was in my nursery as a baby and remained in my childhood bedroom until I went to college. I love that it is now in my sons’ room. The colors are also just perfect and it reminds me of Yales and my honeymoon in New Zealand (even though it was painted by a local Baltimore artist in the early 90s). I have a few other pieces in his room which I’ve collected over the years, that work perfectly in a little boys room. I think all of the art plays well off of each other, and just looks adorable in his little bedroom.
