How I Create A Restful Bedroom Oasis (Insomnia Tips!)

For those of you who have been following me on Instagram for awhile, you have probably heard me talk about my issues with insomnia in the past. I’ve always been a poor sleeper (trouble falling asleep, often waking up in the middle of the night, and I’m a light sleeper). It runs in my family, as both my dad and grandmother deal with poor sleep as well. However, over the years I’ve made it my mission to hack my sleep and improve my sleep routine to get as many Z’s as possible!

In this post, I’m sharing my top tips for making your bedroom as sleep-inducing as possible. Some of these tips may seem like common sense or obvious, but they’ve all made a huge impact on my sleep! I hope you enjoy!

  1. Add White Noise

    My BIGGEST tip for getting a better nights sleep, and transforming your bedroom into a sleep haven is adding a white noise machine to the mix. I have been using a Dohm white noise machine since college, and I am RELIGIOUS about using it. I went from needing to sleep with a fan (which is not ideal for winter), to using a Dohm white noise machine for that perfect white noise whirl. Now even Yale is hooked!   2. Drop the Temperature

    Reducing your room temperature is a sure way to increase restful sleep. I always find sleeping in a cool bedroom makes me sleep through the night. Nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night, sweating because your heat is blasting. In the Summer, we sleep with the AC and fans on (in addition to our Yogasleep white noise machines!). I find 62-64 degrees to be optimal for me (yes, I monitor the temperature of our bedroom…doesn’t everyone!?).

  3. Add Essential Oils

    I am a huge fan of essential oils, but I find lavender to be the best for sleep. I recommend investing in an organic lavender roller ball and applying it to your inner arms and wrists 15 minutes before bed. I swear it helps lull me to sleep super quickly!

  4. Use dimmable or self-dimming lights

    In order to induce sleep, I’ve used either a dimmable salt lamp or this self-dimming light. It reduces the amount of white light I am exposed to, and I keep my bedroom lights turned off! I find these make a big difference in helping me wind down and feel tired enough to fall asleep! Plus, they can be just bright enough to guide you to the bathroom in the middle of the night, without waking your parter.
