Why We Use Air Purifiers In Our Home

This blog post is part of a paid collaboration with Sharp.

Happy Spring! Despite the current conditions of the world, I am beyond thrilled Spring has sprung here in Baltimore. Nothing brightens my spirits more than hearing birds chirping, warmer days and flowers popping up all over our yards. Spring is my favorite, anyone else? However, the one thing that many people dislike about Spring is the influx of seasonal allergies. I myself suffer from some mild seasonal allergies, which is what initially caused me to get an air purifier for our home a few years ago. Similarly, I have sensitivities to mold, and lived in a moldy townhouse in downtown Baltimore for 3 years. Finding a well-performing air purifier became an essential part of my health and will always be something we keep in our home.

I have recently started using a Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier and wanted to speak more in depth about why we use air purifiers in our home. Check out my blog post HERE for my review on the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier! While we’ve only been using it in our home for a few weeks, we’ve been loving it so far.

In that blog post I go into great detail about the machine. Currently, it is residing in our basement, which has become my husband’s makeshift office for the past couple of weeks. It is keeping the air for him fresh, and thanks is super quiet! Be sure to read more about the device here!

Having gone through a number of air purifiers over the years, here are some of the reasons why we are using a Sharp air purifier in our home!

1) Pollen

As mentioned above, I, like many other people, suffer from seasonal allergies. Come springtime I am sneezing up a storm thanks to the influx of pollen in the air. And in the fall, decomposing fallen leaves can mean more mold exposure. Since we enjoy sleeping with our windows open, some of these allergens get into our home. The use of air purifiers helps reduce them inside the home.

That being said, even if you keep your windows closed, pollen can get into your home via you or your pets. Running an air purifier collects the pollen to keep the air clean.

2) Pets

Similarly to seasonal allergies, some people can deal with an allergic response to pet hair and dander in their home. While Buzz doesn’t shed a ton, he goes through two shedding cycles in the year. The use of an air purifier helps collect some of that excess hair and dander floating around in our rooms.

3) Mold or Mildew

I started using air purifiers when I lived in a basement bedroom that suffered from water damage. Knowing how hard it is to fully clean post-damage, I wanted to invest in an air purifier to keep my rooms air as clean as possible. Removing mold spores in the air can help you breathe easier, especially if you’re sensitive to mycotoxins like me.

4) Dust

Some homes are dusty. When we lived downtown, our bedroom had an exposed brick wall that was not sealed. Meaning, red brick dust got everywhere! Using a HEPA air purifier really helped collect the dust in our room. Just remember to change the filter per the user instructions!

5) Home Renovations

When renovating or repainting your home, you might not consider the fumes, dust and other toxins that it may produce. When we repainted our cabinets, I made sure to keep our air purifiers running frequently, to reduce the number of VOCs in our home. Similarly, building materials can off-gas and produce harmful fumes that you wouldn’t want to inhale. Adding a purifier to your bedroom or other rooms where you spend the majority of your time can help reduce your exposure.

6) You Live With A Smoker

We all know how bad smoking is for our health. That is not a new phenomenon. Ideally, the smoker wouldn’t smoke inside, but if they/you do, using a purifier with a carbon filter can reduce the smoke pollutants in your space.

7) Wood-Burning Fireplaces

While chimneys are made to eliminate most fireplace smoke from your home, some will still seep into your environment. A high-quality air filter can help collect those smoke particulates, keeping your air cleaner.

8) City Living

Living in a city means increased air pollution. Just like pollen and other environmental allergens, pollution can get into your home (especially if you keep your windows open frequently). I would definitely recommend an air purifier in the home or apartment of every city-dweller!
