It is safe to say some of my most frequently asked questions on Instagram are about my Dudley Stephens turtlenecks. The growing popularity of these turtlenecks (and sweaters) is what initially left me intrigued by them, and let me just start off by saying, the hype is real! These turtlenecks are comfy, warm, made from recycled materials, and look good on everyone! In my experience, once you get one Dudley, you’ll be hooked!
That said, I was definitely confused and indecisive before I ordered my first Dudley, which is why I wanted to write this blog post as a reference guide to anyone who is feeling the same! I hope this serves as a helpful guide when you are purchasing your first Dudley! Read on for additional info on sizing, materials, styles and more.
Vello vs Terry Fleece:
This question is probably one I receive the most when it comes to DS. And my response: I couldn’t decide, so I bought both! And to be fair, I love both! But, there are several specific deciding factors I considered prior to adding anymore Dudley’s into my collection. Here are the questions you should consider 1) Where do you live? I found that the Vello fleece is more warm than terry (although both offer great warmth, vello just feels cozier). 2) How will you wear the DS? If you’re purchasing it as a layering piece, perhaps consider the terry because it is thinner. If you want to wear the DS own its own or dressed up, I’d go with vello. 3) Do you have pets? I find that my black terry fleece attracts more lint/dog hair than my black vello…food for thought. Also, maybe don’t get black if you have a dog that sheds (the Camel color seems to show the least amount of lint in my experience). See, many factors to consider! I also have a Story highlight sharing more about the fabrics that you may find helpful! Also check out the Fabric Guide here.
Sizing:
Before I dive into my personal thoughts on Dudley sizing, I’d recommend checking out the Dudley Stephens Fit Guide on their website. I think it is super helpful, and for some reason I didn’t see it before I made my first DS purchase. That saaaaid, I sized up one size for my Park Slope turtlenecks. Their size guide recommended I get the small (my true size), but when it arrived it felt too snug in the arms for my liking. If you like a well-fitted sweater, take your true size. I prefer a little room in my sweaters, so I ordered a medium, which is perfect!
I also own the Palmer Puff Sleeve and had originally ordered it in a medium, which ended up being too big (the puff sleeves add some extra fabric/room). I swapped it for a small which fit great (see image below).
Since I don’t own any other styles of DS (yet), I can’t speak to their fit, but hopefully these notes will be helpful!
Styles:
In terms of style, I only (currently) own two Dudley styles: the Park Slope Turtleneck and the Palmer Puff Sleeve Turtleneck. These two styles are basically the same, except the Palmer very obviously has puffed sleeves. If you want a longer turtleneck that covers your bum, you’ll want to shop the Cobble Hill. My mom and aunt own this style and live in it! Great with jeans or leggings! Looking for something between the Park Slope and Cobble Hill? The Greenpoint is your friend! I want to try this style next!!
