Getaway DC: Our Experience & Review

Getaway DC: Our Experience & Review

Back in May, Yale and I (and Buzz) were invited to stay at the Getaway cabins in Virginia. We truly had the most incredible experience and I wanted to give you a brief recap of our stay with Getaway. I also wanted to thank Getaway for hosting us. It was the perfect 2 night, well, getaway! If you’re interested in booking a stay with Getaway, check out their outposts in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, LA, New York, Pittsburgh & Cleveland, Portland and DC.

Yale and I stayed at our Virginia Getaway from May 10-12 and it was truly the perfect amount of time. We headed out on Friday afternoon, and it only took about 3-3.5 hours to get there despite some DC traffic. To be honest, I had no clue what to expect once we arrived, which made me a little nervous. However, Getaway makes the experience totally seamless. Upon booking your stay, you will receive an email confirmation with the general area of the outposts (so you can get a sense of how far you’ll be traveling). The week of your stay you will get the address of the outpost, and the morning of your stay you’ll receive a text with your Getaway cabin name and the access code to get in. However, should you have ANY issues, there is a lodge at the Getaway outpost with staff able to help you with basic things, and the Getaway team is a quick text away at all times.

Yale and I wanted to take full advantage of the glamping experience, which meant cooking our own food over fire. Since the cabins are equipped with a mini fridge, stove, and outdoor fire pit, you should be good to go in terms of preparing food (even if you don’t know how to build a fire). Each cabin comes with logs and starters (that are inexpensive), to help you create your dreamy campsite. We built a fire both nights, even though it was rainy. We had the best time sitting around our campfire, enjoying some drinks and roasting marshmallows.

I was somewhat clueless as to what we should pack for food, I actually think I packed TOO much (which I guess is better than too little!). For the first night I packed a big veggie pasta salad. No need to bring your own flatware or plates because that is all in your cabin for you. This pasta salad was perfect because I wanted to have SOMETHING in the event we weren’t able to build a fire. Although, there ended up being pasta and sauce for purchase in the cabin, so technically we could’ve made our food there!

I packed fruit, chips, crackers, carrots and hummus for snacks, which were great for lunch in addition to the leftover pasta salad. I also pre-made pancakes and brought syrup which was fun to enjoy for breakfast! For our second dinner, we grilled burgers over the fire which was delicious and perfect!

I can’t speak for the other outposts, but ours was about 30 miles from Charlottesville, which was an option for exploring. We didn’t end up going too far from camp. We did a nice little walk at Cedar Mountain Battlefield which was the perfect easy hike for us and Buzz. We followed that with a quick wine tasting at Early Mountain Vineyards. We were honestly SHOCKED by how beautiful this vineyard was. And their wine was absolutely delicious. I’d go back even if we weren’t staying at Getaway!

I want to keep this recap brief, but feel free to send me a DM on Instagram if you have any additional questions. I’d love to do another stay with Getaway, because the experience was really wonderful.
