Avocado Green Mattress & Pillows: One Year Later

Hi friends! I can’t believe I am writing this post right now, because it means we’ve lived in our house for a year! Pretty wild.

One of the best decisions we made as homeowners, was upgrade our mattress from a conventional inner-spring, to an organic Avocado Green Mattress! Avocado was so nice as to send us a new mattress last year, and I’ve been wanting to give it a full review, after we had spent 12 months sleeping on it. If you saw my one month review last year, you’ll know Yale and I chose the standard king mattress, without a pillow top. Since writing that post, Avocado has come out with a vegan mattress option that doesn’t use New Zealand wool. I can’t speak on how that mattress feels, but I’m guessing it’s just as cozy! We have the original mattress, which is divine.

Now into the review! After a FULL YEAR of sleeping on this mattress, I would absolutely recommend it to ANYONE! I am a back sleeper, so am really glad we decided against the pillow top. At first I was really worried that it was going to be too firm (when the mattress first arrived it was HARD). But with more use, and rotating the mattress every 3 months per Avocado’s recommendation, the mattress has only gotten softer. If you are a super soft mattress person, the pillow top will probably work fine for you, but you can always add a mattress topper after the fact!

We’ve definitely found that rotating the mattress has kept it from getting any settlement spots. After a few months of it being it one position, there are definitely indentations from where Yale and I both sleep. That is remedied by rotating the mattress, which instantly makes it feel like an entirely new bed.

I truly can’t say enough great things about the Avocado mattress. Other than it taking a full month for the mattress to arrive, the experience has been wonderful. I will recommend that you do the home delivery and setup. The king mattress weighs over 120lbs, so lugging that thing upstairs would’ve been a workout. I felt awful for the delivery man who installed ours (the box says it requires 2 people, but he was on his own…poor guy!). Rotating the mattress is a workout, but I’ve done it on my own and survived!

I wanted to make a quick note on the boxspring situation. The Avocado website recommends a platform bed (aka no boxspring) for the foundation. They claim a traditional boxspring makes the mattress bouncy and possibly less stable. We purchased a bed prior to reading this info, so needless to say I was worried we’d be getting ourselves into a bumpy situation. So far, there have been no bounciness issues with our mattress on a standard boxspring (we have 2 XL twin boxsprings, that I just purchased from my local mattress store. Nothing fancy). I wouldn’t worry about the boxspring being an issue if that is a concern you were having.

I also wanted to briefly talk about the Avocado pillows. We have 2 of their king sized pillows (in addition to two normal, non-organic pillows). The Avocado pillows are definitely more firm than your average pillow. They are made with a removable filling, which you can take out to adjust the pillow to your comfort level. Since they are pretty firm, we use them as a support pillow underneath our “sleeping pillows”. They’d also be great decorative pillows if you use standard shams on your bed.

All in all, I’d absolutely recommend an Avocado mattress and pillows to anyone. They have great customer service, and offer frequent discounts on their mattresses, so definitely keep an eye on their site if you’re in the market.
