I LOVE BATHS! || Two Detox Bath "Recipes"
You can probably guess by this title, the fact that I am obsessed with baths. I freakin’ love them. Always have. And trust me, I totally get that baths aren’t for everyone. The idea of sitting in your own hot filth water, doesn’t sound super appealing on paper. But they’ve transformed my wellness routine, and are SO much more than a pool of hot body grime water!
The point of this blog post isn’t to tell you you need to be taking baths, rather how they can improve your self care regimen. I actually didn’t have regular access to a bath until Yale and I bought our house last year. I’m also not the type of person who loves bathing in hotel baths. Unless I’ve cleaned it, I kinda feel weird. But that’s beside the point.
Let me share a quick story with you. When we were planning our wedding, I obviously found myself stressed, and getting sick frequently due to my compromised immune system (stress doesn’t do my body well). I was so sick of taking vitamin C CONSTANTLY, I started searching for other remedies to help ease my colds, stressful days, sore muscles, etc. I stumbled upon an article titled “How to Take A Detox Bath”, which immediately caught my eye. I’ve always known that baths are great for soothing sore muscles, but I didn’t consider them to be particularly detoxifying.
After doing a bit more research on my own, I learned that this is indeed a thing. Sweating, plus the healing effects of essential oils, Epsom salts and other ingredients really is detoxifying. Now ANY time I start to feel myself coming down with something, I take a bath. In addition to taking my regular immune-boosting supplements, I will take a detox bath everyday, until my symptoms subside. My LLMD told me when going over my healing protocol, that I must take Epsom salt baths to help my body detoxify the bacteria that is making me sick. DOCTOR RECOMMENDED! Hello. I am in.
I have two “recipes” for my detox baths, but both are really similar. The awesome thing is both involve Epsom salts, which are really inexpensive and are pretty easy to find at drugstores, grocery stores, etc. Like I said, the recipes are similar, and one is more DIY than the other (aka using products you already have in your home, versus buying a mix of detox ingredients pre-made online). Also feel free to tweak the recipe however you like. Use more or less of any ingredient. This is just what works for me! Want to get even more detoxing benefits? Use a dry brush before or after your bath and you’ll be feeling good!! Keep in mind, I don’t usually use a whole cup of Epsom salts when taking a normal bath (although you could). Typically I use 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of Epsom salts in my regular baths. I just use a LOT when I am feeling sick.

The Health Mason Traditional Detox Bath: 20 minute soak recommended, followed by a cool shower.
1 cup of Epsom Salts (I buy mine from Sprouts or Amazon)
1/2 cup Baking Soda (I like Bob’s Red Mill in bulk)
2 tablespoons organic ground ginger
1 tablespoon Wedderspoon Manuka honey
5 drops lavender essential oil
This recipe is awesome because it is meant to make you SWEAT! The ginger is obviously spicy, and you’ll be sweating like crazy in no time. Ginger may help reduce muscle pain and stiffness, and is known to have many anti-inflammatory properties. Why honey you ask? Great question. Manuka honey has many antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It felt like a great thing to add to a detox bath!
Epsom & Mustard Bath: 20 minute soak recommended, followed by a cool shower.
1 cup Epsom Salts
2 scoops of Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath Mix
If you take a look at the ingredients on Dr. Singha’s mustard bath mix, you may think it sounds really similar to my bath above. Which it is. However, I don’t add the clay or as many essential ingredients like rosemary, and eucalyptus to my detox baths. This mix is SO GREAT if you have a sinus infection. It opens you right up, and makes you sweat. It also doesn’t smell like mustard. I promise. However, it will turn your bath a radioactive yellow-green color, don’t be alarmed! It hasn’t stained my tub (but I do give it a good clean afterwards). Read this article for more or this one!
